"The Big Blue Sound" · Houston, Texas
One of Houston's premier big band ensembles, the Conrad O. Johnson Orchestra has been a cornerstone of the city's musical culture since the late 1970s — performing jazz, blues, soul, swing, and funk for audiences across Houston and beyond.
The Conrad O. Johnson Orchestra — known as "The Big Blue Sound" — was founded in Houston, Texas by the late Conrad O. Johnson, Sr., a visionary bandleader and musician whose passion for big band jazz and blues shaped generations of Houston musicians and audiences. Under his leadership, the orchestra became one of the city's most beloved musical institutions, known for its warmth, power, and deep community roots.
Conrad Sr.'s legacy lives on in every performance. Today, under the direction of Music Director James Williams, Jr., the orchestra continues to honor that tradition while bringing fresh energy to the stage. A gifted conductor and multi-instrumentalist, James leads the CJO with the same spirit of excellence and community that defined the orchestra from its earliest days.
The orchestra is a full big band ensemble — trumpets, trombones, saxophones, piano, bass, and drums — performing a repertoire that spans jazz standards, blues, soul, swing, and funk. The CJO holds a monthly residency at Emmit's Place in Houston every first Sunday, drawing loyal audiences who return month after month for an intimate evening of live big band music.
In 2026 the Conrad O. Johnson Orchestra was selected as a recipient of the City of Houston's Initiative grant, awarded through the Houston Arts Alliance and the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs — recognition of the orchestra's lasting contribution to Houston's cultural life.
"Music is the heartbeat of a community. We play to keep that heartbeat strong." — Conrad O. Johnson, Sr.
