On Saturday, April 20, 2013, the Conrad Johnson Orchestra, under the leadership of Music Director James Williams, will bring to Houston one of the country’s premier musical talents – Sean Jones. Jones, who Amazon calls a “supremely talented type whose vision and sensibility encourages inclusion,” will join the Conrad Johnson Orchestra in concert at Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall.
Jones, the former lead trumpeter for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (with Wynton Marsalis), is currently the Artistic Director of the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Jazz Orchestras. Jones is also a Professor of Music at Duquesne University.
The Conrad Johnson Orchestra embodies the spirit and vision of the late jazz great Conrad “Prof” Johnson whose influence on jazz in Houston and nationally is immeasurable. “Prof’s” love of music inspired him to teach, play and direct big band jazz in our city with a passion that is unparalleled. His compelling story of using music education as a tool to mold young lives is now an emotionally charged documentary on the big screen entitled, “Thunder Soul.” Oscar winner Jamie Foxx served as executive producer.
The Jazz at the Hobby Center concert will be a rich synthesis of down-home Texas blues and sophisticated jazz reminiscent of “Prof’s” deep musical heritage that embodies the music legend’s brand of excellence!
At 10am on the morning of the concert, April 20, the Conrad Johnson Orchestra and Jones will host the inaugural “Conrad Johnson Orchestra’s Jazz Excellence Workshop” for aspiring, young jazz musicians.
Sponsors of the concert and educational workshop will immediately align their brand with a legacy of excellence!
